Loud cheering broke out in Bingley Arts Centre today as councillors turned down a controversial planning application for up to 440 homes near Bingley.

Just after 4pm, members of the Shipley Area Planning Panel voted to reject the proposed development at Sty Lane, Micklethwaite.

Planning officers had recommended councillors approve the proposed development on green fields, but members of the panel decided to go against the recommendation.

The arts centre, packed with protectors, erupted with cheering when six of the seven councillors on the panel voted against the plan by developers Redrow and Bellway.
