Traffic conditions have been described as chaotic near two Bradford schools.

Disruption due to ongoing construction work at Grange Technology College and Southfield Secondary Special School shared campus in Haycliffe Lane, Great Horton, has meant limited parking has been available since the start of the school term.

One concerned resident, from nearby Little Horton Lane, wrote to the Telegraph & Argus describing the situation as “chaos” and “dangerous for children and cars”.

Ward Councillor Joanne Dodds (Lab, Great Horton) said: “There is nowhere for the staff to park. It is a problem for dropping and collecting the children, it’s a very narrow road. The volume of traffic caused at the school run is dangerous, frightening really.”

But she praised the schools for trying to manage the situation by stewarding traffic, encouraging parents to walk their children to school and asking staff to car share.

Paul Burluraux, head teacher at Grange Technology College, said: “We understand the issues faced by local residents and we are doing all we can to alleviate problems. This includes exhorting nearly 500 staff to park courteously and legally.

“We have written and sent texts to parents encouraging them not to obstruct the traffic flow and we have encouraged as many students as possible to walk home. Senior staff maintain a presence outside the school at problem times to ensure student safety.

“We have also been working closely with the police, civil enforcement officers, neighbourhood wardens and the highways department to try to make the situation better.

“Once the works are completed and we have 280 parking places on the site, we expect the situation to be greatly improved.”
