Firefighters used cutting equipment to free a woman trapped in a crashed car.

They worked quickly and expertly to prise smashed panels from the vehicle to bring the woman out safely.

But they were not carrying out the task on the road. The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crew was in a school playground, demonstrating their life-saving work to parents and children.

Parents and pupils at Lapage Primary School, Bradford Moor Community Primary School and Delius School, all off Barkerend Road, were taking part in a road safety and health event organised to educate people about measures they can take to keep youngsters safe.

Bradford Moor ward, in which the schools are located, has one of the highest rates of child road casualties in the district, with 53 in the period 2008 to 2010, out of a district-wide total of 874.

Organised by Bradford Council’s road safety team, the event included a special slide showing what happens to an adult and child when not wearing seat belts.
