A vigil to mark the 66th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb attacks was held in Bradford today by members of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Flowers were laid by Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Naveeda Ikram, on the memorial plaque in Norfolk Gardens for the victims of the blasts, which killed more than 200,000 people at the end of the Second World War.

Dominic Lindley, a development worker for Bradford-based Yorkshire CND, who read out a peace declaration at the event, said: “It’s important to remember the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

“It’s especially important because we still live in a world with nuclear weapons so the chance of a catastrophe like this happening again is still feasible.

"There are efforts by the international community to bring about nuclear disarmament, being led by the people of Japan, and it is an opportunity for states like the UK to bring about nuclear disarmament.”
