Police have released this picture after burglars armed with hammers carried out a brazen attack on an Otley jewellers.

Two masked men used the tools to smash the front window of S Manning Jewellers, in New Market, shortly after 11.30am on Tuesday.

They then grabbed jewellery and watches worth a “significant amount” before escaping in a dark-coloured Citroen C4, driven by a third man.

Shop manager Steve Perry said: “A car parked up, two guys jumped out with balaclavas and sledgehammers and put the window through, and grabbed stock from the front window.

“I was shocked but things happen. It’s a way of life unfortunately.”

Allan Robinson, who runs neighbouring Discount Stationery, said: “We have all been left a bit shocked. You don’t expect this in a little market town like Otley.”

Police recovered the car, which was stolen and had been fitted with false registration plates reading LC08 RFN, in Whiteley Croft Road shortly afterwards.

Detective Inspector John Dexter said: “This was a shocking incident. We’ve spoken to a number of witnesses but would welcome any further information, particularly from anyone who saw the men abandoning the stolen Citroen on Whiteley Croft Road or at any time leading up to the incident.”

Anyone who can help should call Detective Sergeant Ben McDonald on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
