A man has been arrested after another man found floating unconscious in the Leeds-Liverpool Canal died in hospital.

Michael Alan Houghton, aged 51, of Horsforth, died in Leeds General Infirmary last night. A post-mortem examination was under way today to establish the cause of his death.

Police believed Mr Houghton may have been assaulted prior to the discovery of his body by a passer-by off Leeds and Bradford Road, Kirkstall, at about 7pm on Saturday.

Detectives were questioning a 22-year-old Leeds man today in connection with the investigation following his arrest earlier in the day.

The bicycle which Mr Houghton was riding before the incident had been missing but it has now been recovered.

Police are still keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed anything suspicious or who saw Mr Houghton cycling in the area.

Mr Houghton was 6ft 2in, 14 stone, stocky, with short brown hair, a tanned complexion and clean shaven. He was wearing an orange/red T-shirt, black shorts, white trainers and grey fingerless cycling gloves.
