Bradford’s Paper Zoo Theatre Company is touring Dennis Potter’s Blue Remembered Hills around the region.

Last night it was performed at Bradford Cathedral, and there will be more local dates to follow.

Directed by Julia O’Keeffe, Blue Remembered Hills is a deceptively-simple play, originally written for television, about a group of eight-year-old children growing up in the Forest of Dean during the Second World War.

Through their innocent eyes, the audience sees the strains of living with fear and uncertainty, as well as the petty rivalries and jealousies that fuel their games. As the children bicker and play, their innocence is tainted by the shadow of violence, leading to a tragic outcome.

“It’s an energetic performance of this moving tale of lost innocence, using our trademark blend of music, movement and humour,” says David Peel, who plays Donald in the production.

Formed in 2005, Paper Zoo Theatre Company has developed a reputation for staging innovative and imaginative productions, as well as nurturing new local talent. Previous company member Laura Milnes recently graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama, and Ben Eagle will take up a place there in September.

Productions so far include Waiting For Godot, Twelfth Night, An Evening Of Joe Orton and touring productions of A Christmas Carol and Animal Farm. Last year, the company returned to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with 2020Vision, a thought-provoking glimpse into the not-so-distant future.

Blue Rememberd Hills is at Queen’s Hall, Burley-in-Wharfedale, on Wednesday, August 24 (ring 01274 431576); Otley Courthouse on Friday, September 9 (01943 467466); Victoria Hall, Saltaire, on Tuesday, September 13 (01274 581504) and Bradford Playhouse on Friday, September 30 (01274 820666).
