SIR – I am writing to you regarding the letter from Alan Chapman (T&A, June 27), in which he defends the idea by Philip Davies MP that the disabled should be allowed to work for less than anyone else.

Mr Chapman referred to people with disabilities as “handicapped” in his letter, not once but three times.

Maybe if Mr Chapman stood away from his pen and paper for a day and went out in the world to see how many people with ‘disabilities’ live and work in this city, and all over the world, then he may just change his old-fashioned views.

I myself have a minor disability and I work, I get the same wage as everyone else in my workplace, and I do my job very well.

I was appalled by Philip Davies’s speech in the Commons, and I am equally appalled by Mr Chapman endorsing it.

Thankfully, Mr Chapman and Philip Davies are in a minority, and we live in a city that allows everyone to have the same chance in life, no matter what their disability, race or creed may be.
