Residents have objected to a cricket club’s bid to sell alcohol at its newly-extended premises.

Haworth Cricket Club, in West Lane, will officially open its extended premises in June.

The club wants to be able to sell alcohol between 6pm and 11pm weekdays and from midday to 11pm at weekends and on bank holiday Mondays.

A spokesman for the club said: “Our facility is very small – nine metres by seven metres – so we can very easily monitor the behaviour of our customers. As the opening times of the bar will mainly be when matches are taking place, we will always have 12 or more senior club members present to deal with any incidents.”

The club’s application will be considered at a hearing of the Keighley and Shipley Licensing Panel at 10am on Wednesday.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 at Bradford City Hall.

The proposals face five objections from local residents who raise concerns about the potential for noise nuisance and litter.

A letter from one couple opposing the plans states: “Granting a licence allowing hours of daily alcohol consumption in the heart of the most peaceful part of the village would shatter everything Haworth means to us and, I suspect, what it means to countless others.”

Another letter of objection argues: “The club at the moment attracts people who want to watch the match.

“If the club was licensed it could attract people just for the drinking.”

However, the club spokesman said: “Our ground is situated approximately 50 metres behind housing on West Lane. These houses have long gardens, so our facility is well away from the residences.

“Just as we will not tolerate any bad behaviour on the cricket field, we will apply the same principles to running the bar and at the first sign of any trouble will immediately close it.”
