A man was seriously hurt when he was assaulted by a gang of teenagers in a vicious unprovoked attack in Bradford.

The 39-year-old victim is detained in hospital with a head injury after he was attacked with stones, though his injuries are not life-threatening.

Police described the assault as a “nasty and unprovoked attack.”

The man was walking through a snicket, off Aireville Road, Frizinghall, when he was confronted by a group of youths in their late teens. Verbal exchanges took place between them and the gang attacked their victim with stones.

It is alleged there was then a further assault by two members of the group.

The victim, who has not been named, suffered a broken wrist and a head wound. He was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary but transferred to Leeds General Infirmary for specialist treatment.

His condition is described as stable and not life-threatening. Police are trying to establish a motive for the attack, but have ruled out any racist element.

Detective Inspector John Priestley, of Airedale and North Bradford CID, said: “This was a nasty unprovoked attack on the victim who was just going about his business.

“It took place quite close to the football pitches near Frizinghall Community Centre at a busy time of day and in daylight so would potentially have been witnessed by quite a lot of people.”

Det Insp Priestley urged anyone with information about the assault, which took place at around 4pm on Monday, to contact Airedale and North Bradford CID, on 0845 6060606.

Information can also be given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

l Two 15-year-old local youths have been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident and remain in custody yesterday.
