Promising engineers have had their achievements recognised by the family who put Bradford on the automotive map.

Members of the famous Jowett family were at Bradford Industrial Museum to meet five of the Bradford University mechanical and automotive engineering students awarded Benjamin Jowett Memorial Scholarships.

The awards of £500 to each student have been given to the best-performing first-years since 1999.

Marjorie Illingworth, daughter of Benjamin Jowett, who co-founded the Jowett car company with his brother William in Bradford in 1901, set up the scholarship in memory of her father and to acknowledge the family’s contribution to the automobile industry.

The students were able to view a collection of Jowett cars in the transport section of the Eccleshill museum.

Presenting the awards, Professor Alistair Wood, dean of the university’s school of engineering, design and technology, said: “Jowett is still here and that’s really testament to pioneering engineering.

“Here we have the pioneers of the last century and you are the pioneers of the new century. I hope this is just the beginning of your achievements.”
