A community organisation in Bradford has been selected for a pioneering national scheme aimed at helping residents tackle issues in their neighbourhoods.

Bradford Moor play and pass service (PASS) is one of 16 groups chosen from some 600 applicants to take part in the Neighbourhood Challenge scheme, run by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA).

The 12-month programme will see PASS, based in Attock Park, receive £150,000 in funding to help entrepreneurs in the area develop ideas to improve the neighbourhood.

The organisation, which delivers leisure, health, educational and youth activities, will be supported by the Bradford branch of UnLtd, a nationwide foundation which supports social entrepreneurs.

Anjid Hussain, one of about 20 volunteers who run PASS, said: “Our project is about identifying entrepreneurs, supporting individuals to drive projects that will benefit the community.

“We will be looking to support individuals through a programme of grants and awards. We want them to be able to develop projects they feel passionate about and make an impact in our neighbourhood. We are delighted to be selected as one of the successful organisations. We are very excited and looking forward to working with NESTA.”

Phillip Colligan, of NESTA’s Public Services Lab, said: “This community organisation has already shown that they can inspire local people to get together and take action on the things they care about. Over the next year we’ll be supporting them to go even further, showing what can be achieved through people-power.”
