Businesses are cashing in on the upcoming royal wedding as they experience a boom in demand for memorabilia.

Flags, commemorative mugs and souvenir tea towels are among the items in high demand, with one online retailer in Keighley reporting an ‘enormous’ increase in business.

Meanwhile, another town has announced plans for a major celebration to mark the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday, April 29.

Skipton has followed in the footsteps of Ilkley by unveiling details of a community celebration in the town centre.

A 15 metre high, double-sided screen will show live coverage of the ceremony to crowds in the car park on Coach Street, Skipton.

Coverage will begin at 10am on April 29, giving people plenty of time to join in the excitement in the build-up to the wedding ceremony.

Afterwards, three live bands will perform on a stage in the car park.

And to round the day off and to start the weekend’s waterway festival – which this year has a musicals theme – there will be a special showing of the hit family film, Grease.

Town manager Brett Butler said the wedding day celebrations would be free and would be the perfect start to a Bank Holiday weekend of entertainment.

The event has been made possible with a £7,000 donation from the Skipton Business Improvement District.
