Students have launched a campaign to save Bradford’s FreeCityBus.

They fear the free shuttle service could be axed in the latest budget cuts.

An announcement revealing its future will be made at the full meeting of Bradford Council on February 24 along with decisions on other budget savings.

In the meantime, students are rallying support after they got worried when the West Yorkshire Transport Plan 2011-2026, outlining priorities for transport across the region, failed to mention the FreeCityBus in a consultation document.

Mohammed Munawar, vice president of Bradford College Students’ Union, said: “The service helps many of the 35,000 students in Bradford get to classes on a daily basis. The bus is a lifeline for many of our students who wouldn’t be able to get into college without it.

“The recent Government announcement to remove the education maintenance allowance has come as a devastating blow to students and the removal of the FreeCityBus would have a further negative impact.”

Bradford College Students Union has been encouraging students to sign a petition to show the Council why they should keep the bus.

Students have also been rallying support from other users.
