A record number of nominations have flooded in for this year’s Young Citizen Awards, which honour the achievements of youngsters across the district.

Almost 200 nominations have been received in the Bradford Council-run awards scheme, which is supported by the Telegraph & Argus.

Tickets are now on sale for a celebrity-studded awards ceremony, which will be at St George’s Hall on Wednesday, March 9.

Coronation Street’s Sam Ashton, who plays Chesney Brown, and Matthew Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe in Emmerdale, will join Bradford City and Bradford Bulls players at the event.

The awards recognise the achievements of young people in five categories, taken from the Government’s Every Child Matters agenda.

They are Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Wellbeing.

The awards are designed to reflect the Council’s “B-Someone” campaign which encourages young people to succeed, improve their skills and fulfil their potential.

Sarah Turnbull, principal development officer of the B-Someone campaign, said: “The response to the Young Citizen Awards 2011 and the amount of nominations received this year has been incredible.

“There has been nearly 200 nominations received – more than ever before.

“The standard of nominations is extremely high and everyone nominated shows that Bradford and the district’s children and young people are extraordinary and excellent role models.”
