A man was killed and two others were injured in a horror collision after a police pursuit.

Minutes after officers in a marked car had given up following the silver Peugeot 106 at about 9.30pm last night, a police helicopter spotted it crashed on its roof near the entrance to St Helena Caravan Park on Otley Old Road, close to Leeds Bradford Airport.

The 18-year-old driver from Horsforth received fatal injuries.

His front-seat passenger, also 18 and from Horsforth, was left fighting for his life in a critical condition at Leeds General Infirmary.

Another Horsforth man, aged 19, who was in the back of the Peugeot, was also hurt but his injuries are not life- threatening.

The Peugeot had first been sighted by officers near Weetwood Police Station. When it failed to stop, they followed it towards Otley.

But a police spokesman said the officers lost sight of the car as it entered Otley - they backed off because of the way it was being driven.

It was soon after that the Peugeot, believed to have knocked down a tree during the collision, was discovered by the helicopter searching for it.

The force's Professional Standards Department and the Independent Police Complaints Commission have now been notified.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle being driven in the area during the time leading up to the collision is asked to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 01924 293047.
