A Bradford cheerleading troupe for people with learning disabilities is set to pom-pom its way across the Atlantic for the World Championships.

Members of The Jewels are heading to Disney World, Florida, in April to showcase their talents, after performing in the Future Cheer International Cheerleading Championships last May.

The troupe was set up by Bradford District Care Trust for people with a range of learning, sensory and physical disabilities to learn new skills, increase social opportunities and self-esteem and encourage exercise.

Andy Waller, project manager at the trust, said: “It’s testament to the cheerleaders’ and support team’s dedication, commitment, ability and enthusiasm that we have been chosen to cheer and dance on the world stage.

“It’s absolutely amazing that we have all been able to work together to introduce an innovative programme that has enabled people with learning disabilities to become cheerleaders and represent the UK in America.”

Working in partnership with Hot Ice Cheer and Dance Academy, the 20-strong squad has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months and is now looking forward to performing in front of thousands of people at the prestigious cheerleading event.

One of the troupe, Zil Haque, said: “We can’t wait to go to Florida. I’m really excited. We are going to do our best performance ever! I absolutely love cheerleading!”
