Surgeons have carried out an emergency operation on a 15-year-old boy who was injured in a car crash during a police chase in Keighley.

The teenager suffered multiple injuries, including extensive head wounds, when the SEAT Leon smashed into gates and a wall at Keighley Business Centre, killing the 20-year-old driver, Sayeed Iqbal.

Two other teenagers, a boy and a girl both 16, who were back-seat passengers, were injured, although their conditions are not life-threatening. The 15-year-old remained in a critical condition at Leeds General Infirmary yesterday.

It is understood surgeons had to wait before carrying out the operation to reduce swelling to his brain.

The boy, who has not been named by police, was a pupil at South Craven School at Cross Hills, near Skipton, until he left last summer.

Yesterday, hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects at the funeral of bank worker Mr Iqbal, of Stockbridge, Keighley, which took place at the Emily Street mosque in the town.

His body was then flown to Pakistan where he is to be buried.

An investigation into the circumstances of the pursuit, which occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, is being probed by West Yorkshire Police Major Collision Enquiry Team and is being overseen by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The SEAT had been followed by an unmarked police car when it performed a U-turn and headed off at speed towards Keighley.

The car failed to negotiate a bend and crashed into the wall and fence in South Street. Flowers and messages of condolence have been left at the site.

An inquest into Mr Iqbal’s death was opened yesterday by Coroner Roger Whittaker and adjourned pending further inquiries.

Witnesses who saw the crash or the car beforehand should contact West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606.
