An MP is leading the campaign to introduce a fuel stabiliser amid fears only rich people will be able to drive as petrol creep ever higher.

Shipley MP Philip Davies said “outrageous” prices are damaging struggling families and the economy. He has tabled a Commons motion demanding Government action to introduce a stabiliser.

It would mean fuel duty is pegged to the price of oil so that when the price of oil goes up the proportion of tax goes down, and vice versa, maintaining a steady price for consumers.

Mr Davies said: “The current petrol and diesel prices are astronomical and ridiculous."
