Protesters opposing Government plans to raise tuition fees held a demonstration in Centenary Square today.

Students from the University of Bradford were joined by members of Bradford People’s Coalition Against the Cuts in the city centre to take part in the demonstrations.

It was one of many marches, occupations, demonstrations and vigils held across the country yesterday in opposition to the coalition Government’s plans. MPs are expected to vote before Christmas on the proposals.

Shelley King, 22, ethics, environment and welfare officer at the university’s students’ union, was one of the organisers of yesterday’s event.

She said: “The world today has so many issues, such as climate change, and education is a means of trying our best as a human race to come up with ways to approach these massive issues with knowledge and know-how.

“This isn’t just about university fees. Taking away the Education Maintenance Allowance is going to make going to college and doing A-levels to get into university something that isn’t possible for lots of students.

“With the proposed £9,000 fees, the Government is basically telling all the young people that debt is okay, and I think that is a really unhealthy and unhelpful message to be sending out to future generations.”
