A man who subjected his daughter to a catalogue of sexual abuse for nearly two decades, has been jailed for 12 years.

John Thompson, 65, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court yesterday after pleading guilty to three charges of rape and one of indecent assault against his daughter, Anne-Marie Wilson, while they were living in Buttershaw, Bradford, in the 1980s.

Anne-Marie, now 40, has waived her right to anonymity, and in a statement said Thompson had made her a prisoner and she did not regard him as her father.

The convictions were obtained after West Yorkshire Police’s cold case team reviewed forensic evidence linked to pregnancies Anne-Marie suffered at the hands of her father.

Thompson, formerly known as McMillan, was jailed for three years and nine months in 2007 for sex offences against his daughter in their native Glasgow.

Detective Superintendent Colin Prime, of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Investigation Review Team, said: “These offences began when she was 11 years old and only ended when she had the courage to flee the family home when she had reached the age of 29.

“It was only later that she was able to talk to anyone about what had happened and disclose details of the life of abuse she had suffered at the hands of her father.

“You can only imagine the pain and suffering that she had to contend with as she grew up in what should have been a warm and loving family environment.”

In her statement, Anne-Marie Wilson said: “I do not regard John Thompson as my father. I do not believe he has any right to be thought of as one. He made me a virtual prisoner from a very young age and for much of my life. His abuse and cruelty toward me took away my childhood and teenage years.

“I have lost those years but knowing that the extent of what he did has been recognised by the court means I can continue to move on and close the door on what happened to me.

“I did not think he would ever be brought to account for what he did to me and when the police told me they had forensic evidence linking him to one of his crimes I had no hesitation in supporting them during their investigation.”
