More than 100 homes in Bradford are shutting out burglars thanks to a £15,000 grant.

Single mum Shahida Begum, of Wibsey, contacted local councillor Lynne Smith after being burgled and hearing about other victims.

Coun Smith and her colleagues secured £15,000 of funding for CASAC (Community Action and Support Against Crime) to fit locks, lighting, alarms and other crime prevention measures at 100 houses in the village.

Mrs Begum said: “We had a lot of burglaries around here and I feel safer now. It was brilliant that the councillors have supported the community in this way.”

Neil Goldup, of CASAC, said: “A security assessment is free for everyone in the Bradford area. Installation of any necessary security devices is also available free to elderly people who have been burgled.

“After we have been to homes and fitted locks and other devices there is only a 0.01 per cent repeat of burglary so basically that makes all the homes we work with burglar proof.”

Coun Smith said: “It was an ideal scheme to spend ward money on.”
