Hundreds of guests have been invited to an Eid Milan dinner to raise money for the victims of the Pakistan floods.

The Pakistan Society of West Yorkshire has organised the event at the Bradford Hilton on Friday as part of its annual fundraising efforts.

The society’s president, Rashid Awan, said the money raised through the event will be donated to the Pukar Project, developed by politician and sporting legend Imran Khan, chancellor of the University of Bradford.

Mr Awan said: “It is the charity for the victims and rehabilitation of the victims of the floods in Pakistan.

“They have done a lot of rescue and relief work and now they are starting the rehabilitation of the area.

“They are rebuilding some of the houses devastated by the floods.”

Mr Awan said the society felt it was important to continue to raise funds for those affected by the floods and to try and keep these efforts in the public eye.

He said: “People look upon these organisations, such as Pukar, as very worthwhile organisations who are there to build houses and other businesses for people who lost everything during the flood.

“Imran Khan is doing tremendously good work and we believe the money we raise will go to the people it is being raised for. So we are pleased to support this charity and we are hoping to raise a lot of money for them.”

Mr Awan said the event, sponsored by Jet2.com, will be attended by 650 people. He said: “We think creating awareness is a continuous process and it is going to take a good few years to really finish the work which is being undertaken by organisations in Pakistan.

“British people have already donated a tremendous amount of money and I have received a lot of telephone calls and pledges from people in the British community who are there to support the society.

“We know the people of Bradford and other surrounding areas have a lot of support and sympathy for those affected by the floods in Pakistan.”
