A tribute concert played in London to former Black Dyke band cornet player Maurice Murphy raised money for the Ronald Moore Sickness and Benevolent Fund.

The charity supports members of the London Symphony Orchestra who are unable to work due to sickness.

Mr Murphy was a member of Bradford’s Black Dyke Mills Band that won the 1959 and 1961 National Championships of Great Britain.

From there he moved into classical music with the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra as principal trumpeter for 15 years, before taking up the same role with the London Symphony Orchestra for 30 years.

Oscar-winning composer John Williams wrote specially for Mr Murphy’s accomplished playing.

Mr Murphy retired in 2007 and died last month, aged 74.
