A man who was part of a group intending to burgle cannabis from a Bradford house was allegedly stabbed by the occupier, an inquest heard.

Shazad Habib-Ur Rehman, 32, died in hospital on October 25 – five days after the incident, in Beckside Road, Lidget Green, Bradford – from complications from a stab wound to the chest, the hearing in Bradford was told yesterday.

Mr Rehman, of Dalton Court, Sheffield, was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary following the incident in the early hours of Wednesday, October 20.

Coroner’s officer Alan Pritchard said Mr Rehman, a motor mechanic, underwent surgery and was placed on the intensive care unit, but died there. He was identified by his brother, Ayaz Habib, before his death.

Home Office pathologist Dr Andrew Falzon carried out a post-mortem. His preliminary cause of death was delayed complications due to the stab wound.

Mr Pritchard said a second post-mortem by forensic pathologist Dr Nigel Cooper, on behalf of a man arrested in connection with the incident, had come to the same conclusion.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Jon Hoyle, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, told West Yorkshire Coroner Roger Whittaker that Mr Rehman was taken by three friends to Bradford Royal Infirmary after the incident. He said it became apparent the wound was serious and the likelihood of Mr Rehman surviving was minimal.

He said: “Three men and Mr Rehman attended an address, intending to burgle the premises and steal cannabis from inside the premises. The 62-year-old occupier is alleged to have stabbed the deceased at this point.”

Det Chief Insp Hoyle said the occupier was initially arrested for wounding and then arrested in connection with Mr Rehman’s murder after his death. He is presently on bail pending further inquiries and advice from the Crown Prosecution Service as to whether he should stand trial.

Mr Whittaker released Mr Rehman’s body to his family for burial.

He said: “The case is adjourned pending further reports from Det Ch Insp Hoyle and depending on whether or not there is a charge arising out of these circumstances.”
