A mum has spoken of her horror after her toddler son collided with an ice-cream van as she took him to buy a treat.

Two-year-old Arhaam Ali was thrown to the ground in the incident. He was treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary for a fractured skull.

The accident took place on the alleyway between Gladstone Street and Sandford Road, Barkerend, on Sunday at 1.05pm.

Mother Sofia Kauser, 25, said: "Arhaam wanted an ice-cream and I came out of the house with the children. He was heading to the van.

"I was talking to the other children when I heard a bang and Arhaam was on the floor. He was bleeding out of his nose.

"Arhaam was back on his feet straight away. The van drove off. I went to the corner to see where the van was going."

Arhaam's injuries also included bruises to his lips and eyes and scrapes to his chin.

Mrs Kauser, whose other children are Aneeqa, seven, and Aadam Ali, three, said the hours since the accident had been traumatic.

"I was so worried when I got to the hospital. A couple of people said another boy had just died that day from an ice-cream van accident. That upset me even more because I did not know what was going to happen. My son's face had totally changed. He is usually very active."

Arhaam, who attends the Women Zone creche in Leeds Road, was discharged from hospital yesterday.

The mum-of-three, of Gladstone Street, said ice-cream vans in the area were posing a hazard to children.

"They park up in that alley. It's very risky and dangerous because when the vans come out children don't know where they are coming from. The road should be blocked off."

The driver of the Mr Yummy's ice-cream van, a 53-year-old man, was arrested for dangerous driving and has been released on bail.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Bradford Road Traffic Police on (01274) 376459.
