This is the face of child rapist Mohammed Nawaz, who is on the run from the police and is thought to have fled the country.

West Yorkshire detectives are hunting Nawaz, 58, after an all-ports alert was issued to trace him when he disappeared part-way through his trial.

It is believed he could be in Pakistan after flying out of the UK from Gatwick Airport last week via Dubai.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman yesterday told the Telegraph & Argus: “Inquiries to trace his whereabouts are continuing.”

Nawaz, of Flockton Road, East Bowling, Bradford, was convicted in his absence at Bradford Crown Court on Thursday of repeatedly raping and sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl and indecently assaulting a girl aged 11.

Nawaz, a married businessman, failed to turn up at court last Wednesday, part-way through his trial.

The case continued in his absence and the judge, Mr Justice Treacy, issued a warrant for his arrest.

He was told that Nawaz’s home had been searched and his passport was missing.

The jury – told not to speculate about Nawaz’s absence during their deliberations – convicted him of four offences of rape and five of sexual assault.

Mr Justice Treacy said he would sentence Nawaz when he was arrested and brought to court or order probation reports and deal with him in his absence.

But the judge also told the court that Nawaz had been found guilty of a very serious case of sexual abuse, with one girl “abused in a particularly gross way over a long period of time”.

The jury had heard that Nawaz carried out a catalogue of abuse against a girl when she was aged 12 to 14, including raping her many times in the flat above his fast-food restaurant, the Shalamar takeaway in Stanningley, Leeds.

He indecently assaulted a second girl when she was aged 11.
