A man, aged 23, died today after becoming trapped in a collapsed drainage trench in Bradford.

A major rescue operation was mounted by the emergency services to try to save him.

The incident at West Royde, off Bingley Road, Heaton, started at about 11.30am.

The man's family are believed to have gone to the scene to witness the rescue attempt.

A quarter-of-a-mile stretch of Bingley Road was cordoned off while emergency services, including Bradford Council’s major incident unit, worked for hours to free the man.

Last night a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that the body of a 23-year-old local man has been recovered from the trench.

"It is believed the man had been working in the trench at the time of the incident.

"Inquiries are ongoing to establish how the events came about."

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and is carrying out investigations.
