Member of security staff reported to be ‘aggressive’ will not work for City again

A football steward accused by fans of being “aggressive” when trying to get away supporters to sit down at a Bradford City game will not work for the club again.

Club officials have confirmed the man – a registered security agency steward rather than Bradford City staff – did not react in the correct manner and was immediately removed from that area of the ground.

Some Morecambe fans complained that stewards had acted aggressively at a Valley Parade clash on October 2 when they tried to confiscate a drum and follow football authority guidance to make fans remain seated for safety reasons.

City’s facilities manager David Dowse has defended the actions of the stewards, saying they had behaved correctly and had had to deal with people turning on them in an aggressive manner.

But he has now confirmed the club has told the security agency it did not want the steward at matches in the future. He said: “Clearly, it is a situation where he did not react in the right manner – although I would suggest it was in extreme provocation. But we cannot have that sort of reaction.”

He said all agency staff were licensed, but the club would review on an individual basis whether they were suitable. But Mr Dowse said the situation was not a cause for concern.

He reiterated that it was wrong to brand stewards at the club as aggressive, rejecting further claims by a Bradford City season ticket holder.

The fan was in the TL Dallas stand and saw the events unfold in the Morecambe end. He said: “The stewards were being forceful and aggressive.

“This isn’t the first incident we have seen over the past couple of seasons and some of the lads employed seem hell-bent on getting a reaction.

“This behaviour from our stewards has to stop. They may have a job to do and need to be telling fans to sit down, but when they go into a crowd with such aggression they are creating a bigger hazard than the one they are trying to prevent.”

But Mr Dowse said: “Why is it always the stewards who are at fault? I have issues with some of the things being said. All people have to do is abide by the crowd regulations. If they are doing things which are contravening the regulations, or affecting public safety, we will take the appropriate action.”

There's nothing quite like jumping the gun. The story has been removed from last week saying the stewards weren't at fault but now this.
.
Maybe in future it's a good idea to get all the facts before talking to the media.

When you are at at a footballl match supporting your team I defy anyone to not stand up at times. Put Mr Dowse in a seat at a football match, would he remain seated for the whole game ?? I am not condoning misbehaviour in any way shape or form but Morecambe hardly represents a crowd threat

As has been said in the article, this was NOT an isolated incident. Stewards are always having a go at fans for any little thing. I know they are trying to do their jobs, but the way the do it needs to be looked at.
.
A few weeks back, a young City fan was recording some footage on his mobile. Yes, this is against regulations, but the steward was very aggressive towards him. He told the lad to delete the recording and then tried to grab the phone from the kid to make sure!!! Is this acceptable? If the young lad had hit out at the steward, who would have been banned from the ground?
.
Towards the end of last season, there were some lads stood right at the back of the TL Dallas stand, towards the left. Because they were not in the main group that always stand (with the drums), they were aggressively told to sit down. When the lads pointed to the others stood to the right of them and asked why they weren't being told to sit down, the response was, "They are singing. If you want to stand up, you have to sing". So, are we saying that it is less likely to have an accident if you are standing and singing as opposed to just standing?
.
I go to a lot of away games and see home (and away) fans standing in areas where they shouldn't. However, we rarely see any scuffles between fans and stewards as a result or continuously being told to sit down. How come these clubs don't seem to be concerned about being fined by the Football League? Dowse is simply creating the 'monster' with his meddling (just ask Lenny and his bag of sweets)!!
UNBELIEVABLE!!

Watching this incident was more entertaining than watching the game.

I think I'd be aggressive if I was outnumbered by the amount of fans this chap was, but seen as I was sat on t'other side of the ground, I know not what occurred.

Does the chap not even get a 2nd chance though?

Saw the guy being wheeled away by the other stewards. It was more entertaining than the match.

It has struck me that the stewards at VP feel obliged to justify their presence by being 'assertive'. The lack of courtesy/manners hardly endears them. The guys employed to 'check' bags at the Midland Road turnstiles are also a complete waste of time and effort. Why bother?

If a teacher lays one finger on a child (even grabbing their collar), can land them in serious trouble. Why do you think a steward that grabs a grown man by the back of the neck deserves a second chance???

Just because he wouldn't hand over his drum, doesn't allow for this kind of behaviour!!
