A Bradford MP will meet the family who inspired so-called Megan's Law' on a trip to see how America deals with paedophiles.

Home Office Minister and Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe will set off tomorrow on a fact-finding visit to see how, under the US law dubbed Megan's Law', publication of the names and addresses of paedophiles are dealt with.

He will be making the trans-Atlantic flight for a short three-day visit, and expects to return again in the future.

He said: "I will be meeting with Megan's family and it will be a very busy schedule.

"I will be speaking with law enforcement agencies and looking at how not only America deals with the problem, but Canada and Europe as we want to have a very clear view about the way forward."

Last month, Home Secretary John Reid signalled a major policy shift, saying parents could be informed of the whereabouts of sex offenders.

Meanwhile, Mr Sutcliffe is also considering the report into Stephen Ayre, the 44-year-old who raped and abducted a ten-year-old boy as a means to getting back into prison.

The Telegraph & Argus reported earlier this week how he held a private meeting with senior Home Office officials, senior chiefs from West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Probation and Shipley MP Philip Davies. Mr Sutcliffe said he was looking at what information from the internal report carried out by West Yorkshire Probation could be put in the public domain without "jeopardising public safety or the integrity of the service."

He promised to answer questions from Mr Davies as to how this was allowed to happen, what went wrong, what measures should have been in place and what will be done in the future.

Mr Sutcliffe said: "I will be writing up the notes from the meeting and taking things from there and I will speak with the T&A directly about what can and cannot be published and explain why some details may not be able to be released."

Ayre was released early from prison after serving 20 years of a 25-year sentence for the murder of a Shipley woman in 1984.

In February, he abducted and raped the ten-year-old because he said he wanted to get back behind bars - where he will now spend the rest of his life.
