Police landed a significant catch when they were called to a Bradford fishing tackle shop, a Court heard.

They netted two night-time raiders fleeing with a bag of stolen goods.

Mamoor Khan, 42, and Fiaz Khan, 34, both of New Cross Street, West Bowling, Bradford, pleaded guilty to burgling Tackle2U in Manchester Road on January 19 this year.

Prosecutor Stephen Uttley said the men only admitted the offence after their trial had started at Bradford Crown Court.

The jury had been sworn in when they men asked the judge for an indication of what sentence they would receive if they confessed to the crime.

Mr Uttley told the court today that shop owner, Philip Edge, was alerted when the burglar alarm sounded late at night.

Police found a hole in the back fence and caught the defendants red-handed.

They fled on foot but were arrested with a holdall containing £700 of stolen property.

The pair were equipped with burglars’ equipment that included crowbars, gloves and torches.

“Both these men knew exactly what they were about that night,” Mr Uttley said.

He told the court the defendants caused £400 worth of damage getting into the shop.

Fiaz Khan denied any involvement in the break-in when he was interviewed by the police.

Mamoor Khan made no comment to officers’ questions, the court heard.

Mamoor Khan’s solicitor, Anne-Marie Hutton, said he had a wife and children and relied on incapacity benefit because he was in poor health.

Martin Robertshaw, barrister for Fiaz Khan, said his client had alcohol problems and led a chaotic lifestyle.

Recorder Peter Babb sentenced Mamoor Khan to a community order with 12 months’ supervision and a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement.

Fiaz Khan was sentenced to a community order with 18 months’ supervision and three months of overnight curfew.

The men were ordered to pay £200 compensation to Mr Edge.
