Cautious Richard Edghill will not risk jeopardising his chances of making a return to the League One firing line.

The City full back survived unscathed from Tuesday's friendly at Shrewsbury, his first full outing since breaking his ankle in February.

But Edghill is not getting carried away as he continues to build up gradually towards the season opener against Nottingham Forest in 16 days' time.

"I didn't think I was ready to play the full 90 minutes but I got through it anyway," he said.

"The gaffer decided to leave me on and I felt all right, apart from being a bit leggy towards the end.

"The ankle felt a little bit weak and got a few knocks but I was pleased to get through. Now I can try and get on with some rehab because as soon as I finish it just swells up.

"I've had a couple of games now but it's still a case of taking it easy and being sensible.

"There is no point in me playing every minute of every game and then breaking down when the season starts. I want to be right for the first league game and that's my aim."

Colin Todd needs a fully fit Edghill to perform at right back and his versatility could be a useful asset as the hunt for a left back goes on.

Todd hopes to have another trialist with plenty of league experience on board for the weekend trip to Boston.

Edghill admitted City will need to step up a few gears after the flat defeat at Gay Meadow.

"The performance wasn't what it should be and I think we all know that. We can get a lot better," he said.

"But it may have done us some good because if you win every friendly 4-0 or 5-0, you can go into the season thinking it will be easy.

"We all made mistakes and as long as you're big enough to own up to them then fair enough. I'm sure we'll improve on Saturday."
