Leading Bradford businessmen, community figures and special guests gathered at the weekend to raise money for those whose lives have been left devastated by the floods in Pakistan.

Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, minister and Conservative party chairman, was one of a number of guests at the event at Bradford’s Hilton Hotel on Saturday which raised £100,000 for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).

Television presenter Christa Ackroyd compered the evening’s entertainment, which featured music, speakers, an auction and a prize draw.

Professor Mark Cleary, vice chancellor of Bradford University, attended the event to deliver a message on behalf of former cricketer Imran Khan, chancellor of the university.

The event was hosted by HSBC along with the Lahore Cafe Bar and the Hilton Hotel.

Shakoor Farooq, one of the managing directors of Lahore Cafe Bar, said £50,000 was raised at the event, which was matched by £50,000 from HSBC.

He said: “The £100,000 is a lot of money in any terms, but £100,000 in Pakistan will go a long way in terms of helping people affected by the floods.”

He said Asif Khan, area commercial manager at HSBC, said: “From the start of the idea to raising £100,000 is a magnificent job and a lot of the credit goes to Asif Khan.”

All the money raised will go to the DEC, an organisation which has co-ordinated relief efforts for more than 800,000 Pakistani people using UK charitable donations of some £40 million.

Charity Save the Children yesterday warned Pakistan faces a severe hunger crisis as the number of severely underfed children in the flood-hit country rises.

According to UN statistics, more than 12,000 children have become acutely malnourished since heavy monsoon rains devastated large parts of the country in early August.
