Two women were thrown from a car after it flipped over on to its roof on a notoriously dangerous road in Cullingworth.

Four people were taken to hospital following the accident in Halifax Road, Cullingworth, this afternoon.

Police said two women received serious head injuries following the accident and were taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary with two men, who had been trapped inside the car.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers were called to the road at 1.35pm after receiving reports that a Citroen C3 had flipped on to its roof.

The spokesman said: “Two female occupants were thrown from the car and two male occupants were trapped in the car.”

The road where the accident occurred remained closed for four hours while investigations were carried out.

The police spokesman said: “Diversions were put in place between Manywells Brow and Haworth Road.”

Ward councillor Mike Ellis (Con, Bingley Rural) said a report to the Shipley Area Committee last week identified Halifax Road, between Bingley Road, Cross Roads, and Manywells Brow, Cullingworth, as the most dangerous road in the Shipley area.

He said: “This follows on from another serious accident not so long ago and reading the report from the last Shipley Area Committee, that stretch of road is the most dangerous, as far as accidents are concerned, in the area.

“I said before that we really do need to get all the agencies together, the traffic engineers, the police and anybody else who can add to it, to see what we can do with this road.

“It’s hard to pre-judge what has happened at this moment, but it does seem that there is a pattern of accidents on this particular stretch.

“Obviously I hope that the people involved are able to make a speedy recovery and there’s no long-term effects from the accident.

“But we have now got to investigate and not just sit back and have this level of accidents resulting in serious injuries on this stretch of road.”

Last month a 58-year-old Halifax woman died in hospital after the Ford Focus she was driving was in collision with a lorry at Flappit, near Cullingworth.
