Four workmates are set to travel more than 1,500 miles across Europe for a charity rally in two old bangers they bought for £250 each.

Tom Lyon, 21, Alexandra Flaxman, 30, and Amanda Jones, 19, will driving a 1993 BMW 318 through France, Germany and Switzerland to hopefully reach Rimini, Italy.

They chose to raise thousands of pounds for cancer charity the Lymphoma Association by joining the event after a close friend was diagnosed with the disease.

Mr Lyon, of Eldwick, Bingley, said: “He has lymphoma of the stomach and he’s regularly in and out of hospital so the money raised could go a long way to helping other people like him.

“We will be travelling 1,500 miles in a car that costs no more than £250, is over 20 years old and has a list of things wrong with it as long as my arm, so I’m not certain we’ll make it!”

The team aims to raise £1,500 and it has already raised £250 thanks to a donation by bosses at Bradford & Bingley’s Crossflatts headquarters.

They will be joined in the Motoscape 2010 rally by their B&B colleague, Alex Brearley, 24, of Wilsden, and his friend Nathan Metcalfe, 30, of Saltaire.

The Bradford City fans will be driving a BMW 325i with 160,000 miles on the clock, which they bought on the internet.

Mr Brearley said: “Nathan has decided to do it for Macmillan Cancer Support. They helped his grandmother a lot before she died and it is a very worthy cause. We are also doing it for the Bradford Burns Unit Appeal because we are both big Bradford City supporters and it is the 25th anniversary of the fire this year.

“We’ve never done anything like this before. Getting the car was the first step, then trying to find out what is wrong with it.

“Once we have figured that out, we will be ready to go!”
