Young ‘wannabe’ stars can rock out with their parents at Rock School in Bradford this summer.

Factory Street Studios has teamed up with school support services firm Education Bradford to offer seven fully- funded places to young people aged under 18 and their parents, grandparents or carers.

People who sign up will be able to take advantage of professional music studio equipment which is used for rehearsing by a clutch of Bradford bands, including White Light Parade, Motus and The Heavens.

Sessions will be run on weekdays. Participants will learn how to play instruments and rehearse with the help of experienced musicians and sound engineers. They will create a band, record tracks, take part in a photo shoot and make a CD of their work.

Amy Eden, who co-owns the music studio with her husband Alex, said: “It’s an amazing experience which without fail has brought out the creative potential in all the participants. They get so much out of it and they are really wowed by the facilities and making records, and seeing the end product is a real treat.

“It’s not the normal thing for a family to do on an afternoon.”

Previous Rock School ‘graduates’ have stayed together as bands, including two groups of Bradford teenagers called 13 Sixteen and Unknown Species.

Some have been lined up by Factory Street to perform at the Works Skate Park, Leeds, this Sunday to celebrate international Go Skateboarding Day. Two former students have enrolled at performing arts schools.

Vicky Meer, of Education Bradford’s family learning team, said: “This is an amazing opportunity for families across Bradford to do something really incredible together this summer.

“I hope as many families as possible take up the opportunity. We aren’t looking for professionals, just enthusiasm.”

Rock School sessions for nine to 12-year-olds run August 2 to 6 and for 13 to 18-year-olds on August 16 to 20 and August 23 to 27, from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. For more information call Mrs Eden on (01274) 682125.
