Anxious parents are worried about their children’s safety after several months without a crossing patrol officer near their schools.

Mustafa Gulam, of Lumb Lane, who rallied his neighbours yesterday, said of his street: “It is one of the busiest roads in Bradford.

“There used to be a patrol but now there isn’t one. It’s a dangerous place.”

Mr Gulam, who has four-year-old twins and a ten-year-old daughter at Springwood Community Primary School, in Wood Street, said he had called Education Bradford several times since December to ask about a patrol.

Education Bradford said the post has been unfilled since February – not December.

Green Lane Primary School, Springwood Community Primary School, Abbey Green Nursery School, Atlas Community Prim-ary School and the MA Institute and Community Development Centre are all less than half a mile away from Lumb Lane.

“Hundreds of parents and children use it (Lumb Lane) daily, its a really busy road,” said Mr Gulam.

A spokesperson for Education Bradford said: “The previous school crossing patrol post-holder resigned at the end of February 2010. The vacant post was locally advertised and a replacement was appointed. Unfortunately the successful candidate then decided not to take up the position.

“The vacancy has been further advertised, but the service does totally rely on the local community to fill these important posts in assisting parents and pupils across the road on the journey to school.”
