A man who sparked a high-speed police chase through Bradford on a stolen motorbike, “goading” officers as they pursued him, has been jailed.

Richard Milburn, 25, of New Hey Road, East Bowling, was travelling home from a party on the Yamaha motorcycle, at about 1am on October 21.

He drove at up to 60mph in a 30mph zone, he had been drinking alcohol, was not wearing a helmet and did not switch the bike’s lights on.

Bradford Crown Court heard today he rode the bike “erratically” on Gain Lane, Leeds Road and Dick Lane, driving the wrong way round roundabouts, taking the wrong side of the road, and mounting pavements.

Prosecutor Simon Haring told the court: “As he drove along he was waving his arms, turning round to face police officers, and apparently laughing.”

Kam Dhesi, mitigating, said Milburn had “taken convenience over common sense”.

He said the defendant, a former demolition worker who has a two-year-old daughter, had mistaken an unmarked police car for a vehicle driven by his friends.

Citing Milburn’s previous convictions for criminal damage, Judge Jonathan Rose asked: “How many goes do you want?

“You have used up your chances, the court twice having put its trust in you, that two-year-old child having put her trust in you. It is a day of reckoning for you.”

Sentencing him to 12 months for aggravated taking of a vehicle and three months to run concurrently for driving over the prescribed alcohol limit Judge Rose said: “Mercifully there was little traffic about and no pedestrians about.”

“You continued to goad them (the police) by waving your arms.

“This was a drunken escapade and you can only be regarded as a fool.”

Milburn was given no separate penalty for driving the bike without insurance and he was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 18 months.
