One of Bradford’s oldest residents has notched up another birthday reaching the grand old age of 105.

Dorothy Coates celebrated the occasion with a new hair-do and a visit from the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor John Godward, who called in to Burger Court where she lives in Barkerend Road for a slice of cake yesterday.

Even though Dorothy has long since given up her hobbies of knitting and serviette folding, she still joins in sing-a-longs and enjoys listening to music.

“She’s as bright as a button and is quite a giggler,” said Jean Naylor who helps look after her.

“We’re all incredibly fond of her.”

Mrs Coates was born and grew up in Cleckheaton. She married Frank Coates at Hartshead in June 1954 and has a stepson Arthur Coates.

She was 18 at the start of the First World War, 52 when the NHS was formed and had been a pensioner for more than a decade when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.

She worked in the mills as a younger woman and got retail experience in Bradford shops.

Yesterday’s celebrations included a sing-a-long and a small party.

Mrs Naylor said: “When you’re 105 you’ve got everything you need. So instead of presents, any donations would go to Marie Curie Cancer Care. Dorothy is happy with that.”
