Tributes have been paid to a seven-year-old boy who died after a road accident near his Bradford home.

Israr Saad, a pupil at St Matthew’s School, died at Bradford Royal Infirmary on Friday after he was in an accident with a car near Morrisons supermarket in Mayo Avenue.

His family is understood to have moved to Mayo Drive, Bradford, from Scotland last year.

Children at the school, in Mayo Avenue, were told about the tragedy on their return from the Easter holidays at an assembly yesterday.

Head teacher Pat Idle said: “It’s an absolute tragedy that a life can be lost so young.

“Our thoughts go out to the family at this very, very sad time.

“Every holiday I tell the children to take care, we want everyone back safe and sound.

“Israr was a quiet boy, he had settled in very quickly and made friends in class.”

Lena Hunt, chairman of Faxfleet Residents’ Association and Bankfoot Partnership, has been campaigning for safety measures to be built in the area for the past five years.

She said: “The traffic round there is horrendous. There are a lot of children playing there and the cars are just buzzing around them. It was an accident waiting to happen.

“People aren’t thinking of the road. While they’re driving they are just thinking of where they want to go.

“There should be a ‘home zone’ on Mayo Avenue. They have lots of turnings and drivers would have to concentrate as they’re not going straight.

“Something needs to be done before anyone else is killed.”

The Coroner has been informed of Israr’s death and an inquest is due to be opened and adjourned today pending further inquiries.

Witness to the accident, which involved a Skoda Octavia at about 2.05pm, should call the Major Collision Enquiry Team at West Yorkshire Police, on (01924) 293047.
