Rotarians are urging walkers across the district to step out with them and raise funds for wounded British troops.

Bradford Rotary Club member Jack Doyle said the Help For Heroes charity had been chosen because it was “a relevant cause in most people’s hearts and minds”.

This will be the tenth time Bradford Rotary Club has staged the River Wharfe walk. It has raised funds for other projects, including Sightsavers, for several years.

Past president Mr Doyle said Help For Heroes needed boosting this year.

The charity raises money to support members of the Armed Forces, who have been wounded in the service of their country. More than a million people have responded to date and millions of pounds have been raised to buy much-needed services that will aid their recovery.

The Rotary Club’s downhill walk of 21 miles from Buckden to Bolton Abbey is on Sunday, June 20. It takes about eight hours.

There will be three drop-out points at Kettlewell, Grassington and Burnsall, giving shorter walk options.

Mr Doyle said: “It’s not a sponsored walk as such. We ask people to pay an entry fee and get support donations. The fee is £12 for adults and £6 for children up to 16.

Walkers should meet at the Cavendish Pavilion at Bolton Abbey on the day between 7am and 7.30am, to be taken by coach to the start at Buckden.

Mr Doyle said: “It’s a pleasure walk. We want people to come and have fun, enjoy the beautiful scenery and raise funds for charity at the same time.”
