Top Tory councillor Simon Cooke, above, has stepped down from his key post on Bradford Council.
The man charged with overseeing the Council's part in the regeneration of the city quit over "persistent personal attacks" from other members.
Councillor Cooke (Con, Bingley Rural) said he and his family were being placed under "undue strain" because of claims about his conduct by opposition colleagues.
He stepped down last night from the Council's executive committee - where he holds the regeneration portfolio - following months of controversy about the authority's asset management project.
A recent audit commission report carried heavy criticism of the handling of the £1.2 billion project which was aimed at appointing a private partner to run many Council-owned buildings.
The report blamed council staff but not elected members.
