Guiseley residents fed up with rail passengers parking outside their homes are to meet with city council officials to discuss solutions.

People living near the railway station have been complaining for years about the number of rail users leaving their vehicles outside their homes for long stretches of the day.

The problem stems from a lack of parking at the station and in the town generally.

The developers hoping to build a large housing and commercial scheme off Netherfield Road, however, have given residents some cause for hope as they are considering creating a new public multi-storey car park as part of the scheme.

The topic dominated last Thursday's meeting of Guiseley and Rawdon Forum, which was attended by Brian Shaw and Mike Darwin from Leeds City Council's Highways and Design departments.

Forum chairman councillor Graham Latty (Con, Guiseley and Rawdon) said: "It was a very good meeting, with quite a good turnout, and it centred around parking in Guiseley.

"The discussion was about the parking problems that would be helped by the Netherfield Road car park, should that come about, but also what Brian Shaw and Mike Darwin are planning anyway for Oxford Road and Avenue, Netherfield Road and Ashtofts Mount. Because those are the roads that are especially affected by the parking situation and lots of people do park there.

"At the end of the meeting it was agreed that Mr Shaw would meet a small panel of representatives from each road, and that's now being organised.

Meanwhile, the area's three ward councillors are looking into running a survey to find out the exact scale of the problem.

Coun Latty said: "We are considering the possibility of doing some sort of survey in this part of Guiseley to see who's parking where, why, for how long and where they are going on the train.

"That would give us an idea of the pattern and a better idea of how to tackle it."

l St Mowden wants to build up to 200 homes as well as some offices and workshops on the 15-acre former Brook Crompton works site, which is near the train station and split in two by Netherfield Road.
