Moves to preserve Pool-in-Wharfedale's old mill are being made by the parish council.

The mill, on land belonging to the Recreation Ground Management Committee (RGMC), is a precious part of the area's history but is run down and covered in graffiti, a meeting of the parish council was told.

Now the council is trying to launch a joint scheme with the RGMC to preserve the mill, and to improve the bank.

The need for work to preserve the mill was brought to the attention of the meeting by Coun Patricia Walker.

She said the building was covered in graffiti, and a stone seat had been completely destroyed and thrown into the river.

"It is the preservation of the mill which I think is vital now."

Coun Pam Calvert suggested a joint project with the RGMC to improve the bank and the mill."

The council will also look at the possibility of applying for grants for the work.

Coun Edward Joce said: "I am a member of the RGMC and I think they would welcome the proposals that are being discussed here. Especially if there was some funding for a joint scheme."
