Senior figures from Bradford business have met to discuss how they will promote the city on the world stage in Cannes next month.

About 25 companies met at Victoria Hotel yesterday to gear up for the biggest property event in the world, MIPIM (Marche Internationale des Professionals d'Immobilier), from March 14-17.

There was a buzz of confidence and excitement as Bradford Centre Regeneration told how the city's £1.5 billion revamp plans would be placed on the international map for the very first time.

BRC chief executive Maud, Marshall, who is spearheading the renaissance of the city, called Bradford a "sleeping giant, a city on the move."

The sponsors will together provide £100,000 for a branded apartment at the event, which features 74 countries, 2,051 exhibiting companies and 17,641 participants.

The aim is to attract investors into the city, which will be competing with other major players such as Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, London and Birmingham.

Harold Robinson of Shipley-based developers Magellan said it would officially launch its £350 million canalside village scheme during the event, which will include futuristic buildings wrapped around a new canal basin in the city.

"It's important that people who are involved in the city support the BCR and people see that there are major schemes going on," he said.

Mrs Marshall said the convention was part of BCR's drive to turn 12 development contracts into six development projects in the next 18 months.

Mrs Marshall said: "This is a world premier property event. Our efforts are putting Bradford on the map and taking part alongside other cities in the country and other Yorkshire cities. "We want to show what Bradford is capable of. This is the right time to do it as development is taking off."

Mrs Marshall said investors would be sent a strong message about the potential of Bradford, adding: "The city is ready for development. Land values are relatively low compared to other parts but development opportunities are still large so there is room for economic growth."

Bradford investors are optimistic about the event, which they say will give a boost to the city. Roy Boardman of Asquith Properties said: "We are confident in the future of Bradford."

Those attending the event include Bradford Council, Bradford Chamber, Knight Frank, Last Cawthra Feather, Magellan Properties, Walker Morris, Arup, Newmason Properties and Asquith Properties.

They have also been joined by Bradford Property Consortium made up of companies Rex Proctor and Partners, Rance Booth Smith, Robinsons Design Group, Stainforth construction and Gordons solicitor.
