FROM sitting at his school desk to sitting on top of the world has taken young rugby star Danny Care just a matter of months.

The Leeds Tykes player left Prince Henry's Grammar School in Otley only last summer but is already making a name for himself on the world stage.

He was in the England squad which won the Los Angeles Sevens in the USA beating Fiji in the final.

Under stand-in captain Henry Paul, the former Bradford Bulls star, England won 38-5. It was England's first ever win in the LA Sevens.

England had reached the final thanks to a decisive 38-0 victory over a strong South African side and a 19-5 quarter-final win over Argentina.

Fiji were favourites for the title in LA which would have in theory decided the IRB Sevens series after just half the tournaments. England's win reduces the gap between them and Fiji to 12 points and England remain second in the series table.

The final score of 38-5 was satisfying for the squad who lost to France in Wellington, New Zealand, the previous weekend and had to make do with the Plate win.

England Sevens Coach Mike Friday said: "I am incredibly proud of all of the players, particularly the new caps. Young Danny Care has been excellent in everything he has done and this will be the biggest thing he has won, and will prove a great learning curve for him.

"Next time we play in the IRB Sevens there are double points on offer in Hong Kong so we will focus on that."

Care, who at 19 was the youngest in the squad, said: "It feels pretty awesome. This is the biggest thing I have ever won and ever been involved with. It was hard coming here after the disappointment of last weekend but we came back stronger and learned from it.

"To beat Fiji in the final was amazing. I knew we had the ability to win here and everyone stepped up to the plate. The Fijians just couldn't handle us on the night. The whole sevens experience for me has been quality. I really hope to be involved again soon."
