Cubs Under-17s 8 Staningley 14 - A gutsy performance from the magnificcent twelve was almost enough to win this match, as the Cougars played most of the game a man down.

They caught the visitors out early on with man of the match Ben Carley scoring out wide to the left after a good passing move. The Cubs battled heroicaly against a much bigger team, espesialy in defence. They were rewarded for their efforts when awarded a penalty, Joe Milner giving them a six point lead.

The extra man eventually began to tell as the visitors scored a converted try just before the break. Another Mil ner penalty midway through the second half edged the Cougars back into the lead, which they held onto until five minutes from time, when the visitors' giant prop managed to off-load for the winger to score in the corner. With almost the ast play of the match they crossed again, this time in the right hand corner, to seal the win. Coach Liam Gillard said he was more than pleased with his teams display - their best of the season.

Special mention must go to Anthony Kennedy who lead from the front ably assisted by man of steel Chris Thompson and Gavin Mezels.

The Cougars failed to capitalise on their early pressure, the last pass going to ground on numerous occasions. They never looked in danger of conceeding a score at the other end but seemed unable to break the visitors line attacking down the slope. Sam Walker finally showed the way to the line crashing through from 20 meters. Following his example Josh Ireland scored a similar try before half time giving the Cubs an eight point lead.

Playing up the hill in the second half Jack Cawood latched onto the final pass to extend the lead. Then mid-way through the half Charlie Ecclestone stepped his way through to score in the corner. With ten minutes remaining the visitors hit back, James Permenter forcing his way over the line Oliver Moorhouse landing the kick to give them hope at 16-6 . Three minutes later Lywellyn Chapman dived over from acting half to put the Cubs back in the driving seat.

The ball went through severa pairs of hands before being finished off when James Haythornthwaite crossed for a try and added his side's only kick of the game.

With just about the last play of the match Simon Bolton picked up a loose ball and rounded the defenders out to the left, determination taking him all the way to the line.

Blackbrook Royals 20

The Cubs took on Lancashire side Blackbrook in the quarter-final of the

National Club Knockout in very heavy conditions where ball handling was difficult

for both sides.

Defences were well on top but it was the Blackbrook

forwards who made more ground than the Cubs. The speed of their backs, who seemed able to skate across the mud, clinched the first half 10-0 lead.

Despite this the Cubs

tried hard to make an impression on the Red Rose side but their defence limited any forward progress, and as the Cubs tired Blackbrook were able

to capitalise with another couple of tries to secure a deserved and convincing win.

Top efforts for the Cubs came from Matty Bailey in the

forwards and Ethan Hawkesworth in the backs.

Underbank Under-13s 16

The Under-13s claimed a tremendous fifth consecutive win against a strong Underbank team on a sticky pitch. Underbank's centre provided an early opening try and gave warning to the Cubs that this was not going to be an easy game.

The Cubs hit back, however Martyn Broadley scoring in the corner which was brilliantly converted by Ben Stead.

The Cubs then started to pile on the pressure from the kick-off a good chase pressuring Underbank into a handling error that allowed Broadley to score on the blind side, Stead again converting.

The Cubs then started to pass the ball around Chris Spencer linking with Jordan Aitchison to send Jamie Pickles in for a great try given the conditions.

A quick play the ball then saw hooker Josh Ives jink around the defence and show good strength to take a well earned trymaking it 20-6 at half time.

From the kick off Underbank scored immediately with an excellent full length try that gave the Cubs a wake-up call. Wasim Shabir then went on a ranging run that brought him to within five- metres of the line, a neat off-load to Chris Spencer, showing excellent support play, redressed the scores.

A period of enthralling end to end rugby saw the right wing partnership of Aitchison, Newton and Joe Thorpe keep Underbank at bay, however Underbank showing true grit eventually scored again.

The Cubs were not finished though, Shabir powered in from close range to claim a well deserved try to be joined for the last try of the game shortly afterwards by man of steel Josh Lynam, who was not going to be denied a score.

Huddersfield Sharks 0

In very heavy conditions an under-strength Sharks side put on a brave show against the home side which was lead magnificently by captain J Stephenson. Other notable performances were given by W Doveston and H Luckas the latter scoring the best try of the match.

Cubs v Newsome Panthers

Once again the Cubs had to be split down the middle and play a half each against a depleted Newsome side. The visitors piled on the pressure from the start, scoring first and staying in front until the Cubs drew level at the end of the first quarter. However, this was short lived as Newsome stepped up the attack and edged in front.

The Cubs defended well, as always, with Liam Tarpy leading the defence picking up the Top Tackler award. Barnstorming runs from try scorers Kyle Wilmott (3) and Kyle Akrigg (2), with props Jake Adams and Arron Moorby bagging one each, Dan Conner (1) picked up the Outstanding Effort award for some nice off loading and Al fie Seeley (1) completed the scoring, as well as picking up Man of the Match award.

The Cubs were un ucky to come away without the win, scoring more tries than the visitors but were unable to convert them. It was another great performance in difficult conditions with the Under 10's showing the character that is fast becoming their trademark.
