A Keighley school is celebrating both individual and team successes in the world of table tennis.

Liam Chipman, from St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Ingrow, has fought his way through to the national finals of the Under-11s table tennis competition after becoming West Yorkshire Schools champion.

Liam, 10, of Broomhill Avenue, defeated fellow St Joseph's pupil Mark Preston, 11, three sets to one in the final at Bradford Grammar School last Saturday.

The pair topped their respective groups before meeting in the final.

Liam will now compete in the national event at Stoke in April.

Meanwhile, the school table tennis team has reached the regional final of the English Schools' Table Tennis Association Championship, to be played this Sunday at Blackburn.

Liam, along with Mark and fellow players Carlton Beanland and Daniel Vause, both 10, will compete against pupils from Gladstone Road, Scarborough, St Columba, Barrow, and National Church of England Junior in Grantham, for a place in the national finals, held in Hinckley in March.

The team came through an earlier heat in January, also held at Bradford Grammar.

Teacher Joe Zieba said: "Liam's got great potential and has worked very hard. He's a very natural player, with a lot of flair.

"Mark works very hard at his game and is improving all the time.

"The team have done really well and have done extra training this week for Sunday's event."

The success reflects the progress of the school club, started just two years ago. The team trains every Monday night and is coached by Liam's father, Noel Chipman.

Liam, who has played the game for three years, said: "My dad played badminton and then he got my brother into it. I train two or three times a week, and play twice as well. It's good fun."
