THE Yorkshire Under-20 side will entertain Cumbria at Ilkley RUFC's Stacks Field ground on Sunday, March 12, kicking-off at 2pm.

Yorkshire avenged last season's defeat in the final of the National Under-20 championships in emphatic style when they defeated Cheshire 31-6 at Heywood Road, Sale, on Sunday.

From the moment the White Rose youngsters trundled Cheshire 20 yards backwards from a maul in the first minute for No 8 and skipper James Waterhouse (Rotherham) to score, the outcome was never in doubt.

Yorkshire possessed far too much timber and technique up front for a resolute, but ultimately outmuscled, Cheshire side.

And with constant rain making a fluent handling game very difficult and mistakes commonplace, there was never any scope for the home side to escape from Yorkshire's solid grip on proceedings.

"I was very pleased with the way we performed," said coach Bob Hood, who is also the Yarnbury coach.

"We asked the team for an improvement in their first week's display against Durham and we got one in difficult conditions. I was a bit concerned that we weren't able to finish off some of our chances when the ball went wide, but overall, I think they did very well. It was certainly sweet revenge for that Twickenham defeat."

A second try by Sandal flanker James Smith and three penalties and a conversion from Leeds Tykes full-back Ben Hough gave Yorkshire a 21-6 half-time lead. A try for Driffield wingman Gary Stephenson extended Yorkshire's lead soon after the re-start and when a good piece of running by Stephenson brought a try for his supporting club-mate, scrum-half Tom Foster, Yorkshire looked set to collect a handsome win.Cheshire refused to concede and stuck gamely to the task to deny Yorkshire any further scores.
