Richard Edghill today revealed just how close he got to joining another League One club.

Edghill is hoping to be back in City's squad for the Tranmere game after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Following the "will he, won't he" saga regarding his new contract, the experienced defender is happy to focus on football again.

Edghill penned a new deal last week to tie him down for another 18 months - and kill off speculation he would be off elsewhere.

"I thought I would be leaving at one stage so I'm really pleased it got sorted in the end," he said. "I was actually going to sign for someone else on the morning that Julian (Rhodes) rang me back.

"The other club had rung up and offered a deal. It was just a case of going down there, agreeing everything and signing the papers.

"That was where I was heading when the phone rang and it was the chairman."

Edghill got the contract he wanted in terms of length, although it is believed that the counter offer from City's unnamed rivals, thought to be Blackpool, was for more money.

He added: "Bradford had only offered me another month at first and I wanted a bit longer. I thought I had done all right and should maybe get to the end of season, which is what I was looking for.

"But in the end we agreed another 12 months on top of that, which is something we had talked about before Christmas.

"It's good to have that security and I can get on with it now and play some football. I've got no excuses."

Having missed four games, Edghill has been training again since Friday and is pushing for a recall.

He scored a belting goal at Prenton Park earlier in the season although, given Darren Holloway's current form at right back, Edghill does not expect to come straight in for the return clash.

"Competition is always healthy but I'll keep working hard for a chance. The hamstring is a niggly problem that comes and goes and I've just got to be careful with what I'm doing with it.

"Saturday was a big result for us and hopefully we can build from there. People keep saying we're only in the middle of the table but it's not all doom and gloom.

"Nobody is running away with it and we're only seven points off the play-offs so it's not the end of the world.

"There's a lot that can happen yet because it's so tight, which makes this such an exciting division."
